So perhaps you have access to a sewing machine and you're plotting out how to make a costume... But what do you do with the sewing machine? Or perhaps you own a sewing machine and are unsure how to use it with fur...
Well, I can't offer a full introduction to sewing here; that is beyond the scope of these pages. However, there are many, many introductory sewing books available. What I'm providing here is just an overview with comments specifically geared towards fursuiting.
General Sewing Tips

Practice Sewing With Cheap Fabric
If you're new to sewing, don't expect to learn as you go! Take some time to get used to sewing different types of seams on cheap material so that you don't end up wasting expensive fur. When using a pattern for the first time, it's also a good idea to test it with inexpensive fabric.
I recommend looking for a simple cotton broadcloth to work with. These are usually available for just a couple dollars per yard. Don't work with any fabric that has much stretch, as you won't get an accurate feel for the pattern.
Hand-Crank Over Heavy Fur Layers
There are certain points in patterns where multiple edges and corners come together. (The most common one is the crotch's "saddle" juncture.) In fur, this can be a difficult piece to sew, because of the number of layers involved. I recommended turning the sewing machine manually when working with these areas; it's too easy, otherwise, to snap needles or damage gears.
Do Not Force the Fur Through
Because of the thickness and sponginess of the fur, it can be difficult for it to slide smoothly under the foot of the sewing machine. I find it helps to keep your palm on the fur pieces, next to the machine foot, and gently aid the material in sliding.
Do not force the fur through while you are running the machine. This can result in broken needles (because the pressure bends the stem of the needle while it is in the material) or injury (if you lose your grip and slip forward under the needle). Just use hand pressure to compress and guide the fur smoothly.
