Lifecasting

Lifecasting is the reproduction of parts of a person's body. It is most commonly used to create stone replicas of the head or face. This allows the bust to be used as a basis for sculpting prosthetic appliances or fitting masks. Or it can be a pithy hat stand.

On these pages, I try to provide an overview of the process. This is certainly not a comprehensive site, though. If you've never done it and do not have the assistance of someone experienced, consider purchasing professional instructional materials to help you get started.

Headcasting is dangerous! We are talking about encasing someone's head in a cast (hence the name). Make sure you fully understand the process before attempting it. And bear in mind our disclaimer.

Lifecasting Topics:

I distinguish between facecasts and headcasts. Doing a full headcast is a long and complex procedure. If you only the person's face (e.g. for small prosthetic work), you can cut corners and do cast just the face. Otherwise, see below for a step-by-step guide to the full headcasting process. Also check out the materials page so you know exactly what you need before someone's encased in plaster.
