This was an experimental project which turned out rather well; I managed to construct a costume entirely out of foam!
The inspiration for this costume came when I discovered FleckStone(tm) paint at a local Michaels store. It was such an interesting product that I immediately knew I had to use it in a costume! A little thinking resulted in the design of my gargoyle character; I've always like the way gothic gargoyles (grotesques, technically) looked and I wanted to capture that craggy rough-carved stone feeling in costume.
Design and Construction

On balance, I think it's a pretty nice costume. The all-foam design of the body was a bit of a daring experiment. It looks quite good, conveying the carved stone look that I was seeking much better than fabric-based gargoyle costumes. However, the resiliency of the foam makes the costume one that is hard to perform in; it takes a lot of effort to move around and "emote" with this suit. So that's a definite drawback.
The head of the character is what I'm most proud of. I captured the shape and curve of the muzzle that I wanted; usually, my creations don't exactly reflect my original intentions. Here, I think that Igneous' head has just the right feeling and expression for a gargoyle.
