Carved Foam Heads

Carved foam is one of the more popular ways to create fursuit heads. The resultant heads are relatively light, durable, and comfortable. However, foam heads are rarely seen on commercial costumes because they must be individually sculpted; they cannot be mass-produced.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Foam heads are simple and durable. They are fairly comfortable to wear, although heat can become a problem if the head is tight-fitting. Foam heads can be fairly large before weight becomes a serious issue, although attention should always be paid to balance (unbalanced heads can put an unpleasant strain on the wearer's neck).

Foam heads are limited in how small they can be carved. Most foam loses its support and resiliancy if it is carved to a thickness of less than a half-inch. Allowing necessary air space within the head and clearance to don and remove it, it is apparent that carved foam is restricted to larger head designs.
